In the early hours of September 21, 2021, the life of 23-year-old Collin Mitchell was abruptly ended. A single gunshot wound was the cause of his death outside his residence at the LakeView Apartments in Kalamazoo Township, Michigan. Emergency responders were called to the scene on Elkerton Avenue around 12:20 a.m., where they found Mitchell on the ground, but their efforts to save him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 24-year-old Jayshaun Bishop. It was determined that the motive behind the fatal encounter was Bishop's belief that Mitchell had stolen his dog. This dispute escalated tragically, leading to the violent confrontation that cost Mitchell his life. Although Bishop denied his involvement when questioned by law enforcement, he had reportedly confessed to two other individuals that he was the one who shot Mitchell.
Nearly a year after the incident, justice began to take its course as Jayshaun Bishop was arrested and faced charges for his actions. He was charged with second-degree murder and felony firearm. In a significant development in the case, Bishop pleaded guilty to both charges in September of 2023. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 23 to 50 years for the murder, with an additional consecutive two-year sentence for the felony firearm charge.
