In the winter of 2022, the life of 29-year-old James Douglas White Jr. was tragically cut short in Kalamazoo, Michigan. A devoted father of eight, White was known by his loved ones for his joyful spirit. He found happiness in the simple pleasures of life: spending quality time with his family, fishing, and attending church. His warm presence and the happiness he brought to those around him were cherished by his family and friends.
On the night of December 30, 2022, on North Burdick
Street, between Parsons and Franks Streets, a violent encounter ended in White's death. He was fatally shot at a residence in the area. In the immediate aftermath, an attempt was made to flee the scene, which resulted in a car crashing into a pole. First responders transported White to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led Kalamazoo authorities to two individuals, Jalani Darshawn Nowling and Keyshawn Israel Givhan. Nowling was the first to be apprehended and faced charges of first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearm. Despite his claims of innocence, a jury found him guilty. In February 2024, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
His co-defendant, Keyshawn Israel Givhan, was also arrested in connection with White's murder. Following his trial, he was convicted of first-degree murder and multiple weapons offenses. In January 2025, Givhan was also sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a close to the legal proceedings for both men involved in the tragic death of James Douglas White Jr.
