In the spring of 1984, what began as a simple act of kindness cost a man his life, leaving a community to grapple with a senseless act of violence. On April 15th of that year, Robert Baranski, a 36-year-old male, offered a ride to an acquaintance, Richard Clarey. This chance encounter would prove to be fatal for Baranski. At some point after getting into the vehicle, Clarey shot Robert Baranski, ending his life.
The crime did not come to light immediately.
In an attempt to conceal his actions, Clarey disposed of Baranski's body in a lake near the city of South Haven. For a month, Baranski's fate remained a mystery. Then, his body washed ashore on a beach in southwestern Michigan, turning a missing person case into a homicide investigation. The discovery of his remains was a grim confirmation of the violence that had befallen him.
The investigation ultimately led to Richard Clarey, who was arrested and subsequently confessed to the murder of Robert Baranski. In addition to Baranski's murder, Clarey was also charged with the deaths of two other individuals. During his trial for the murder of Baranski, Clarey entered a guilty plea, though with a diminished capacity claim. This plea resulted in another life sentence for Clarey, ensuring he would be held accountable for the death of Robert Baranski. Two years after his conviction, an appeal of two of his murder convictions was rejected. Richard Clarey remains incarcerated.
