On a spring evening in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the life of 26-year-old Londrell Cook was cut short by gunfire. On April 11, 2020, Cook was shot on the city's north side, in the 800 block of Woodbury Avenue. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries later that day. The shooting also left two other individuals wounded.
The investigation into Cook's death quickly led authorities to focus on two Kalamazoo residents, Fharis Smith, 29, and Dauntrell Walker, 30.
An informant told police that both Smith and Walker were not only present at the scene of the shooting but that they had both fired guns at Cook. Further investigation revealed that a person who had been shooting at Cook might have sustained a gunshot wound during the incident. This information seemed to be corroborated when, following his arrest, a fresh wound, consistent with a gunshot wound, was found on Walker's lower back.
On April 18, 2020, both Fharis Smith and Dauntrell Walker were arrested by Kalamazoo Public Safety officers. At the time of their arrests, both men were in possession of loaded firearms. Smith was also found with two cell phones, over $2,000 in cash, and methamphetamine. A search warrant was obtained for Smith's cell phones, seeking information related to the homicide. Although police indicated that two suspects in Cook's death had been arrested, they were initially held on unrelated charges.
In the days following the shooting, tensions escalated, leading to a series of arrests connected to a planned retaliation for Cook's death. Investigators received information that a group of individuals from Benton Harbor was preparing to retaliate, escalating a feud between some residents of the two cities. In a large-scale operation involving multiple law enforcement agencies, twelve suspects, nine from Benton Harbor and three from Kalamazoo, were arrested during a series of traffic stops over a weekend. The charges against these individuals primarily involved weapons possession and fleeing from police.
While the investigation into the planned retaliation was unfolding, Fharis Smith and Dauntrell Walker faced federal charges related to their arrests. Smith was convicted by a federal jury of being a felon in possession of a firearm, drug distribution, and possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. Walker pleaded guilty to possessing a short-barreled rifle. The federal prosecutions were seen as a way to interrupt the cycle of violence in Kalamazoo by removing key individuals from the street. However, it is not publicly documented that either Smith or Walker were ever formally charged with the murder of Londrell Cook. Fharis Smith passed away on October 21, 2025, at the age of 35.
