On the evening of March 8, 2020, a dispute that began at a children's football game tragically escalated, ending the life of 30-year-old Elijah Fuquan Roberson, a Black male from Kalamazoo, Michigan. The fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of the Canterbury Apartments in Oshtemo Township, where Roberson was found with a gunshot wound at approximately 9:20 p.m. a different account states the time was around 1:30 a.m.
He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Roberson's death quickly pointed to 45-year-old David Lawrence Barnes as the suspect. Authorities issued a warrant for his arrest, considering him armed and dangerous, and offered a reward for information leading to his capture. The events leading to the shooting reportedly started earlier in the day when Roberson intervened in a fight between children at a football game, allegedly striking Barnes' daughter in the process. Roberson's fiancée, however, disputed this claim, stating that he never made physical contact with the child.
Later that night, the conflict resumed when Barnes and Roberson's fiancée met outside the apartment complex. The confrontation intensified when Roberson came outside, leading to a heated argument between the two men. The altercation ended with Barnes fatally shooting the unarmed Roberson. Barnes later claimed he acted in self-defense.
David Lawrence Barnes was subsequently apprehended and faced legal proceedings. He was charged with open murder and felony weapons charges and held without bail. Following his trial, Barnes was convicted for his role in Elijah Roberson's death. On September 12, 2022, a judge sentenced him to a minimum of 216 months in prison for second-degree murder, bringing a measure of closure to a case that stemmed from a disagreement at a youth sporting event.
