On a summer evening in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the life of 29-year-old Dondreal Lee Watkins, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On July 22, 2020, at approximately 6 p.m., gunshots rang out on Woodbury Avenue near the intersection of Ada Street. When officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety arrived at the scene, they discovered Watkins suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Watkins' death revealed it was one of two fatal shootings that occurred in Kalamazoo on the same day. Roughly ninety minutes after Watkins was shot, another man, 28-year-old Devante Coleman, was killed in a separate shooting on Cameron Street. While police have not officially confirmed a connection between the two incidents, the proximity in time has led to speculation.
In the wake of the shooting, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety released surveillance images of a vehicle of interest, described as a late-model gray or silver sedan, possibly a Nissan or a Dodge Caravan with black rims. Despite these efforts and pleas to the public for information, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Dondreal Watkins. The case remains an open and ongoing investigation, leaving a community and a family still searching for answers and justice.
