On the evening of February 25, 2021, Michael William Vines, a 64-year-old male, was shot and killed outside of his home at the Elements on Main Apartments on West Main Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan. A retired public school teacher and U.S. Army veteran, Vines was a Chicago native who had relocated to Michigan. He was remembered as someone who loved photography, music, and was actively engaged in the nation's political scene.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to
reports of gunfire at approximately 8:15 p.m. and found Vines unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation quickly led police to a suspect, 30-year-old Jordan Johnson of Cass County. It was determined that the shooting was a domestic-related homicide, as Johnson knew Vines.
Johnson was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder, felony firearms, and possession of a firearm by a felon. According to police, Johnson confessed to the killing, citing jealousy as the motive. The mother of his child and their child had moved in with Vines earlier that same day. The entire tragic incident was captured on surveillance video, which reportedly showed Vines with his hands up, pleading for his life before Johnson opened fire. It was revealed that Johnson had brought two guns to the scene and fired approximately 20 shots, continuing to shoot even after Vines had fallen.
Facing a potential life sentence, Jordan Johnson accepted a plea deal. On October 28, 2021, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and the associated firearms charges. In accordance with the agreement with the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office, he was sentenced to serve between 25 and 45 years in prison.
