On Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, a deadly shooting in Kalamazoo, Michigan, claimed the life of 16-year-old Kevian Andre Rice. The incident unfolded in the afternoon, around 2:05 p.m., in the 1000 block of Reed Street. Authorities believe the violence was connected to a transaction arranged through an online marketplace.
When officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety arrived at the scene, they found Kevian suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical aid was rendered at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. A firearm was recovered by police at the location of the shooting.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, a vehicle was seen speeding away from the area. This same vehicle later arrived at a hospital with two other individuals who had sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. While they were treated for their injuries, police have not yet announced any arrests in connection with Kevian's death.
The investigation into the homicide remains ongoing. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety has extended its condolences to Kevian's family and friends.
