On a cold February evening in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the lives of a father and son were tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. Seventeen-year-old Tyler Daniel Smith, a male, and his father, Richard Smith, were at a local car dealership on February 20, 2016, when they were fatally shot. The two were reportedly looking at vehicles when a man opened fire on them in the parking lot.
Tyler, a high school senior known for his love of soccer and cars, died alongside his father in the attack.
The gunman, later identified as Jason Brian Dalton, a 45-year-old Uber driver, embarked on a shooting spree that evening, terrorizing the Kalamazoo community. In between picking up and dropping off passengers, Dalton shot multiple people at random locations. In addition to the Smiths, Dalton killed four other individuals and seriously injured two others. His actions spread fear and disbelief throughout the area as the night unfolded.
Law enforcement launched a manhunt for the shooter, and Dalton was apprehended in the early hours of the following morning without incident. During questioning, he reportedly told investigators that the Uber app had taken control of him, though he was later found competent to stand trial. In January 2019, just as his trial was set to begin, Jason Brian Dalton pleaded guilty to six counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and eight felony firearm charges. By pleading guilty, he avoided a lengthy trial and the further anguish it would have caused the victims' families. In February 2019, Dalton was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the devastating loss he inflicted upon the community and the families of those he killed, including the promising young life of Tyler Daniel Smith.
