In the spring of 2023, the life of 41-year-old Jeffrey Howard Russell Jr. was tragically cut short in Kalamazoo, Michigan. On the evening of April 15th, Russell was fatally wounded by gunfire. The incident prompted an investigation by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, which would span several months as they worked to piece together the events of that night and bring a suspect to justice.
The investigation led authorities to Michael Deraz Goldman, a Black male.
Five months after Russell's death, on September 17, 2023, Goldman was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. The Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office brought charges against him, moving the case into the judicial system. On September 9, 2024, a judge sentenced Goldman for his role in the death of Jeffrey Howard Russell Jr. The sentence also included charges related to weapons possession. Following the sentencing, Goldman was transferred to the custody of the Michigan Department of Corrections to serve his time.
