On April 15, 2023, at approximately 4:26 a.m., 41-year-old Jeffrey Howard Russell Jr. was fatally shot near the intersection of West Michigan Avenue and Howard Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS), who were in the vicinity investigating an unrelated incident, heard gunshots and promptly responded to the scene. They discovered Russell with a gunshot wound; he was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
