Melvin Pippins, a 25-year-old male from Crown Heights, was fatally shot in a car-to-car shooting in the early morning hours of October 14, 2015, in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. Around 1:45 a.m., near 165 East 19th Street, Pippins was shot in the chest. Surveillance video captured him stumbling out of his car and across the street before collapsing. He was transported to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath, the NYPD stated that the investigation was ongoing and no arrests had been made.
The death of Melvin Pippins, who was known as 'Melly,' was believed by his brother, Marvin Pippins, and fellow members of the 5-9 Brims gang to have been carried out by the rival 'Real Ryte' gang. This belief in gang-related retaliation for his brother's death motivated Marvin Pippins to seek revenge.
This quest for vengeance led to another killing. On December 19, 2015, Marvin Pippins murdered Sean Peart, a member of the Real Ryte gang, in what was described as a retaliatory act. During his trial, Marvin Pippins claimed he killed Peart to avenge his brother's death. However, it was later revealed that Peart was in California at the time of Melvin Pippins' murder. In April 2023, Marvin Pippins was convicted by a federal jury on multiple charges, including murder-in-aid-of racketeering. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Sean Peart. While Marvin Pippins was brought to justice for his actions, there have been no public reports of arrests or suspects in the murder of his brother, Melvin Pippins.
