In the evening hours of Friday, April 15, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative peace of a Brooklyn playground, leaving a young man's life tragically cut short. Twenty-year-old Daquan Trantham, a resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant, was fatally shot at the St. Andrew's Playground on Atlantic Avenue in Crown Heights, just a few blocks from his Herkimer Street home.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:38 p.m., a time when the playground might otherwise have been filled with the sounds of recreation. Instead, police from the 79th Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired and discovered Trantham with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and quickly transported Trantham to Interfaith Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical staff, his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital. Dinikue Grant, a 19-year-old also from Bedford-Stuyvesant, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with Trantham's death.
