In the spring of 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the daytime peace of a Brooklyn neighborhood, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Dion Reid, a 26-year-old Black man, was standing outside the Francena Mini Market at 1608 Sterling Place in Crown Heights on the afternoon of March 20, 2023. It was approximately 1:10 p.m. when a masked gunman opened fire, striking Reid in the torso and his right foot.
The sudden violence left him unconscious on the sidewalk as the shooter fled the scene on foot.
Emergency responders rushed to the corner of Sterling Place and Buffalo Avenue, where they found Reid grievously wounded. Paramedics transported him to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings County, but his injuries proved to be too severe. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Dion Reid was pronounced dead. The broad-daylight shooting prompted a thorough investigation by the New York Police Department as they began the search for the person responsible for this brazen act of violence.
For ten months, the case remained unsolved, a painful open wound for the community and Reid's loved ones. Investigators from the 77th Precinct diligently pursued leads in their quest for justice. Their persistence ultimately paid off. On January 22, 2024, authorities announced a significant breakthrough in the case with the arrest of 20-year-old Derrick Prescod, a resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant. The NYPD charged Prescod with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Dion Reid. The arrest brought a measure of closure to a community shaken by the violent loss of one of its own.
