On November 14, 1991, Keith Ciszewski, a 37-year-old White male, was tragically killed during a mass shooting at the post office in Royal Oak, Michigan. The gunman was identified as Thomas McIlvane, a former postal worker who had been fired for insubordination. His dismissal had been finalized just days before the attack, following an appeal process.
On that Thursday morning, McIlvane entered the post office and opened fire.
Ciszewski, who worked as a labor relations assistant, was in an office with a female co-worker when the shooting began. He heroically helped the woman escape through a window before McIlvane entered the room and fatally shot him. Three other postal employees were also killed in the rampage: Christopher Carlisle, 33, Mary Benincasa, 32, and Rosemarie Proos, 33. Several others were wounded during the assault.
The investigation revealed that McIlvane's attack was a targeted act of revenge against those he held responsible for his termination. Eyewitnesses reported that McIlvane seemed to be specifically seeking out managers and union representatives. After carrying out the shootings, McIlvane turned the gun on himself and took his own life at the scene. Because the perpetrator died by suicide, there were no arrests or a trial in connection with Keith Ciszewski's death. The tragic event highlighted ongoing labor-management disputes and a toxic work environment at the Royal Oak post office, which had been the subject of prior complaints.
