Overview
Zane Michael Floyd (born September 20, 1975) committed a mass shooting at an Albertsons supermarket in Las Vegas, Nevada, on the morning of June 3, 1999. Armed with a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, he killed four people and critically wounded a fifth. He was arrested at the scene, convicted of four counts of first-degree murder and other felonies, and sentenced to death in Clark County District Court.
Timeline of the Crimes (June 3, 1999)
~3:30 a.m. — At his Las Vegas apartment, Floyd telephoned for an escort and, when a 20-year-old woman arrived, he threatened her with a shotgun and sexually assaulted her. He eventually allowed her to flee after warning her to run. This assault formed part of the charges later upheld on appeal.
~5:15 a.m. — Floyd walked to an Albertsons located at
3864 West Sahara Avenue, Las Vegas, entered with the shotgun, and opened fire on employees inside the store. Over approximately seven minutes, he fired multiple shells, killing four people and wounding a fifth.
~5:22 a.m. — Responding officers arrived while shots were still being fired and confronted the gunman as he exited the front doors carrying the shotgun. He surrendered outside the store and was taken into custody.
