On July 3, 2023, 20-year-old Lashyd Merritt was fatally shot in Philadelphia's Kingsessing neighborhood during a mass shooting that claimed five lives and injured several others. According to his mother, Marie, Lashyd was on a routine break from his work-from-home job, heading to a nearby store for a snack, when he was tragically caught in the gunfire. Described as a joyful individual who cherished his family, Lashyd was the youngest of five siblings and had plans to marry his girlfriend.
