In the Brewerytown neighborhood of Philadelphia, a 37-year-old Hispanic male named Jose Alberto Almonte, also identified as Jose Almonte-Garcia, was shot and killed while at his job on the evening of Thursday, July 13, 2023. The incident occurred at approximately 6:42 p.m. inside the Jefferson Food Market, located on the 1500 block of North 29th Street.
Almonte, a husband and father of three, was stocking shelves when two masked individuals entered the store.
At least one of the men opened fire, discharging a semi-automatic weapon at least five times. Almonte was struck once in the neck. When police and medics arrived at the scene, they found him unresponsive on the floor in one of the aisles. He was pronounced dead at the location.
Investigators discovered five spent shell casings near Almonte's body. While another employee was present during the shooting, police noted a language barrier initially hampered their ability to gather a description of the suspects or a motive for the attack. Authorities have stated their belief that Almonte was specifically targeted.
As of the immediate aftermath of the shooting, no arrests had been made in connection with the murder of Jose Alberto Almonte. The Philadelphia Police Department has asked for the public's assistance, encouraging anyone with information to come forward. The case remains an unsolved homicide.
