Darrell Brooks 2021 Waukesha Christmas Parade Attack
Overview
On November 21, 2021, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Darrell Edward Brooks Jr., age 39 at the time, drove a red 2010 Ford Escape SUV through the crowd attending the annual Christmas parade. The vehicle breached barricades and accelerated through a densely packed route, striking spectators and participants over a stretch of several blocks. A police officer even fired at the vehicle and banged on its hood in efforts to stop it, but Brooks continued driving until the SUV crashed into a nearby neighborhood and he was apprehended at a front porch.
Victims
- Jackson Sparks, 8 years old – succumbed to injuries on November 23, 2021, two days after the attack.
- Tamara Durand, 52 – former teacher, member of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies.
- Jane Kulich, 52 – participated in the parade with Citizens Bank.
- LeAnna “Lee” Owen, 71 – apartment manager, member of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies.
- Virginia “Ginny” Sorenson, 79 – nurse, member of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies.
- Wilhelm Hospel, 81 – there to support his wife, a Dancing Granny.
Injuries
- At least 62 people were injured, including many children and teenagers.
- Notably, one young survivor, Jessalyn (last name not disclosed), suffered critical injuries including a broken pelvis, liver and lung damage, and kidney loss; she reportedly said “Just glue me back together.”
- Another girl named Julia suffered brain trauma and remained in critical condition.
- Jackson Sparks’ 12-year-old brother, Tucker Sparks, was among the injured; he sustained head injuries but was recovering.
