Jeffrey Weise and the 2005 Red Lake Shootings

Overview

Date: March 21, 2005 Location: Red Lake Indian Reservation (Red Lake, Minnesota) On the afternoon of March 21, 2005, 16-year-old Jeffrey James “Jeff” Weise carried out a two-site attack that began at his grandfather’s home and continued at Red Lake Senior High School. In total, ten people died (including the perpetrator) and nine others were injured. The attack remains the deadliest school shooting in Minnesota history.

Background and Lead-Up

Weise had been living with his paternal grandfather, Sgt. Daryl “Dash” Lussier Sr., a tribal police officer, and Lussier’s partner, Michelle Leigh Sigana, on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. On March 21, Weise first killed the couple at their home, then took his grandfather’s police weapons, vest, and squad car before driving to Red Lake Senior High School, where he had previously been a student.

Timeline of the Attack

2:47 p.m. Weise shot and killed his sleeping grandfather inside the home, then fatally shot Michelle Sigana. He took a .40-caliber Glock 22, a .22-caliber Ruger pistol, a 12-gauge Remington 870 shotgun, a gun belt, and a bullet-resistant vest. ~2:49 p.m. Driving the squad car, Weise rammed the vehicle into Red Lake Senior High School’s entrance. He immediately shot and killed unarmed security guard Derrick Brun, then moved into the main corridor where he shot English teacher Neva Rogers. He proceeded to a classroom, where he killed additional students and wounded others. Student Jeffrey May attempted to disarm Weise by stabbing him with a pencil, allowing classmates to flee; May was critically wounded. Police arrived and exchanged fire with Weise for several minutes. After retreating to a classroom, Weise killed two more students hiding under tables and then died by suicide at approximately 2:58 p.m. The shootings at both locations lasted about nine minutes in total. ...Read More
