In the early hours of January 28, 2018, 28-year-old Timothy O’Brien Smith carried out a mass shooting at Ed’s Car Wash in Melcroft, a community in Saltlick Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, killing four people before turning the gun on himself.

Timeline of events

Just before 3:00 a.m. on January 28, 2018, Smith opened fire at Ed’s Car Wash (1301 Indian Creek Valley Road), where two victims were found inside a pickup truck and two others were found outside in the parking area. Law enforcement identified Smith as the sole shooter. He sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene and was later pronounced dead at Forbes Regional Hospital; Pennsylvania State Police announced his death on January 30, 2018, noting he had been pronounced at 8:54 p.m. on January 28.
