Timeline of events
Just before 3:00 a.m. on January 28, 2018, Smith opened fire at Ed’s Car Wash (1301 Indian Creek Valley Road), where two victims were found inside a pickup truck and two others were found outside in the parking area.
Law enforcement identified Smith as the sole shooter. He sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene and was later pronounced dead at Forbes Regional Hospital; Pennsylvania State Police announced his death on January 30, 2018, noting he had been pronounced at 8:54 p.m. on January 28.
Weapons and preparation
Authorities reported that Smith arrived wearing body armor and carrying an AR-15–style rifle and a 9mm handgun, with additional magazines; a .308 rifle was also in his possession. Investigators towed multiple vehicles from the scene as part of the evidence collection.
