James Holmes and the 2012 Aurora, Colorado Mass Shooting

Overview

On July 20, 2012, James Eagan Holmes carried out a mass shooting at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. Holmes, then 24 years old, entered the packed theater armed with multiple firearms and wearing protective tactical gear. He released tear gas canisters before opening fire on the audience. The attack resulted in 12 people killed and 70 others injured, marking one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.

The Attack

Holmes purchased his weapons legally between May and July 2012, including an AR-15 style rifle, a Remington 12-gauge shotgun, and a Glock .40 caliber handgun. On the night of July 20, shortly after the film began at 12:30 a.m., Holmes entered through a side door he had propped open earlier, threw tear gas canisters into the crowd, and began shooting indiscriminately. The chaos inside the theater led to mass panic as people attempted to escape.

Victims

Twelve people lost their lives in the shooting, ranging in age from 6 to 51. Below is a list of the victims:

• Alex Sullivan, 27 – Celebrating his birthday and wedding anniversary
• Alexander C. Teves, 24 – Earned master’s degree in counseling psychology
