Lyndon McLeod’s 2021 Denver–Lakewood Mass Shooting

Background

Lyndon James McLeod (also known by the pen name Roman McClay) was a 47-year-old former business owner and self-published novelist connected to Denver’s tattoo scene. On December 27, 2021, he carried out a targeted rampage across Denver and Lakewood, Colorado, killing five people and wounding two others before being fatally shot by Lakewood Police Agent Ashley Ferris. Investigators later noted he knew most of his victims and had previously been investigated by law enforcement.

Timeline of the Attacks (December 27, 2021)

~5:25 p.m., Denver — Sol Tribe Tattoo & Piercing (Broadway & 1st Ave.): McLeod entered Sol Tribe Tattoo & Piercing and fatally shot owner Alicia Cardenas and employee Alyssa Gunn-Maldonado. A third employee, Jimmy Maldonado (Alyssa’s husband), was shot in the neck and shoulder but survived. ~5:30 p.m., Denver — Attempted home invasion: A few blocks from Sol Tribe, McLeod posed as a deliveryman and tried to force entry into tattoo artist Jeremy Costilow’s apartment; he fired through the door and walls after returning with a sledgehammer. The residents escaped. ~5:45 p.m., Denver — Near Cheesman Park: McLeod shot and killed building contractor Michael Swinyard at Swinyard’s residence. ~5:50 p.m., Denver — 8th Ave. & Zuni St.: McLeod exchanged gunfire with a Denver police officer, disabling the officer’s vehicle; no one was injured. He fled toward Lakewood. 5:58 p.m., Lakewood — Lucky 13 Tattoo Parlor: McLeod entered the shop and shot tattoo artist Danny Scofield (also known as Dano Blair), who died at the scene. ~6:10 p.m., Lakewood — Hyatt House Hotel (Belmar district): McLeod fatally shot front-desk clerk Sarah Steck after a brief exchange, then fled. ~6:15 p.m., Lakewood — Confrontation with police: McLeod shot Lakewood Police Agent Ashley Ferris in the abdomen. While wounded on the ground, Ferris returned fire and killed McLeod, bringing the spree to an end.
