Kristopher Karolkiewicz and the 2026 Grand Haven Township Family Murders

Kristopher "Kris" Karolkiewicz, 47, was identified by investigators as the perpetrator of a devastating murder-suicide that killed his wife and all six of their children in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, on July 24, 2026. Authorities concluded that Karolkiewicz fatally shot Amanda "Mandy" Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children, whose ages ranged from 5 to 15, before intentionally setting fires inside the family home and killing himself. Autopsies determined that Amanda and the children were homicide victims and that Kristopher died by suicide.

The Murders

The killings took place at the Karolkiewicz family's residence in the 14900 block of Riverside Trail in Grand Haven Township, an Ottawa County community near the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. On the morning of Friday, July 24, emergency personnel received reports of a smoky smell in the neighborhood. Responders initially investigated but did not locate an active house fire. Several hours later, shortly before noon, another caller reported visible white smoke coming from the Karolkiewicz residence. Firefighters returned, entered the burning home and discovered the members of the family dead in different bedrooms. Investigators determined that every member of the family had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office ruled the deaths of Mandy and the six children homicides and Kristopher's death a suicide. Detectives said the evidence showed that Kristopher killed his wife and children before fires were deliberately started in several areas of the residence. A handgun registered to him was recovered at the scene. Later reporting based on Michigan State Police investigative records said that all eight people had died before the fire engulfed the house. The children were discovered in bedrooms throughout the home, while the two adults were found in the master-bedroom area, according to subsequent investigative reporting. Authorities reported no evidence that an outside suspect was involved and said they had not found evidence of a struggle during their initial examination of the scene. Several family pets, including dogs and a cat, also died as a result of the fire and smoke.

Fire and Investigation

The fire became an important part of the criminal investigation. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said investigators believed fires had intentionally been started at multiple locations inside the residence after the shootings. Michigan State Police fire investigators examined the home, and later reporting based on police records described evidence collected from several rooms. Investigators concluded that the victims were already dead before the fire spread through the house. Authorities recovered a registered handgun and treated the case as a murder-suicide rather than an attack involving an unknown offender. Investigators said no suspects remained outstanding. The Sheriff's Office nevertheless continued reviewing records and other documentation in an effort to reconstruct precisely what happened before the deaths. Officials initially acknowledged that the violence might have begun the previous evening, but subsequent death-certificate reporting stated that the medical examiner had amended Mandy's recorded date of death to July 24. ...
