Gary Martin and the 2019 Aurora, Illinois Mass Shooting
Overview
On February 15, 2019, 45-year-old Gary Montez Martin opened fire inside the Henry Pratt Company, a valve manufacturer in Aurora, Illinois, during a termination meeting. He killed five co-workers and wounded six other people (including five police officers) before being shot and killed by responding officers. The first 911 reports came in at approximately 1:24 p.m., and officers entered the building within minutes.
Location and Setting
The attack occurred at the Henry Pratt Company facility (a Mueller Water Products subsidiary) in Aurora, about 40 miles west of Chicago. Employees were gathered in a conference room for Martin’s termination when the shooting began.
The Shooter
Martin had worked for Henry Pratt for roughly 15 years. He brought a handgun to the termination meeting and began shooting after being informed of his firing. Witnesses later described a handgun equipped with a green laser. Martin died in an exchange of gunfire with police inside the plant.
