Overview

On Sunday morning, August 7, 2011, 51-year-old Michael E. Hance carried out a mass shooting across a residential block spanning Goodenough Avenue and Schocalog Road in Copley Township, Ohio. Within roughly ten minutes, he murdered seven people—most of them relatives of his girlfriend and their neighbors—before he was shot and killed by responding police. One additional person was wounded but survived.

Timeline of the Attack

~10:55–11:05 a.m. (ET) — Police received the first 911 call at 10:55 a.m. The gunfire unfolded in four closely spaced locations: Hance first shot his girlfriend at their home on Goodenough Avenue, then moved next door and killed multiple victims, pursued another victim onto Schocalog Road, and finally forced his way into a nearby home on Schocalog where he murdered an 11-year-old boy hiding in the basement. A Copley Township officer then confronted and fatally shot Hance outside.

• Amelia Shambaugh, 16 — Aug 7, 2011, shot while seated in a parked car outside the same Goodenough address.
• Bryan Johnson, 44 — Aug 7, 2011, chased from Goodenough and shot dead near/at 1178 Schocalog Rd. (father of Autumn; son of Russell and Gudrun).
• Scott Dieter, 11 — Aug 7, 2011, found and murdered in a neighbor’s basement at 1219 Schocalog Rd. (son of Craig; nephew of Rebecca).
