On August 7, 2011, 11-year-old Scott Calvin Dieter was tragically killed in a mass shooting in Akron, Ohio. The perpetrator, Michael E. Hance, 51, went on a rampage that resulted in the deaths of seven people, including Scott. Hance began his shooting spree by attacking his girlfriend, Rebecca K. Dieter, who survived by playing dead. He then moved on to the neighboring house, where he killed Russell Johnson, 67, his wife Gudrun, 64, their granddaughter Autumn Johnson, 16, and Scott's brother
Craig Dieter, 51. Hance also fatally shot Amelia Shambaugh, 16, who was in a car in the driveway. Scott attempted to hide in a neighbor's basement but was ultimately found and shot by Hance.
The shooting spree ended when Hance exited the neighbor's home and was shot and killed by Copley Township police officer Ben Campbell. The incident was later determined to have been triggered by a property dispute.
