James White and the 2017 Lansingburgh Quadruple Homicide

Overview

In late December 2017, the community of Lansingburgh—a neighborhood in Troy, New York—was shaken by the discovery of four homicide victims in a basement apartment. The victims were 36-year-old Shanta Myers, her partner 22-year-old Brandi Mells, and Myers’ two children, 11-year-old Jeremiah “JJ” Myers and 5-year-old Shanise Myers. The case led to the arrest and eventual conviction of James White, who was found guilty in 2021 and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in 2022.

The Murders

Authorities determined the killings occurred on December 21, 2017, inside the family’s basement apartment in Lansingburgh. Their bodies were discovered five days later, on December 26, 2017, when a property manager entered the residence after not hearing from the family over the holiday. The crime scene—described by local officials as among the most horrific they had encountered—showed the victims had been bound; early reports noted their throats had been slit.
