In the early morning hours of January 28, 2018, the small community of Melcroft, Pennsylvania, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 21-year-old Seth William Cline. The tragic event unfolded at Ed's Car Wash on Indian Creek Valley Road, a place that would become the scene of a horrific quadruple homicide. Seth, along with his half-sister Chelsie Lou Cline, 25, William Scott 'Will' Porterfield, 27, and Cortney Sue Snyder, 23, were fatally shot.
The gunman was
identified as 28-year-old Timothy Smith. Armed with a semi-automatic rifle, a. 308-caliber rifle, and a handgun, and wearing a body armor carrier, Smith had been lying in wait at the car wash. The motive for the shooting was determined to be jealousy. Smith had previously been in a relationship with Chelsie Cline, and family members of the victims stated that he had become obsessed with her after she ended their relationship. Just days before the shooting, Chelsie had reportedly been spending time with William Porterfield.
According to state police, Smith arrived at the car wash first and parked his truck. When Porterfield and Chelsie Cline arrived and exited their vehicle, Smith opened fire, killing them. Shortly after, Seth Cline and Cortney Snyder arrived in a pickup truck, and Smith shot and killed them while they were still inside their vehicle. A fifth individual, a woman in the backseat of the truck Seth and Cortney were in, managed to survive by taking cover, sustaining only minor injuries from shattered glass.
Following the deadly rampage, Timothy Smith sustained a gunshot wound to the head, which was believed to be self-inflicted. He was transported to a hospital and placed on life support but was not expected to survive. Smith was pronounced dead later that same day. The incident was a shocking loss for the small rural town, leaving friends and family of the victims to grapple with the sudden and violent deaths of their loved ones.
