Overview of the Mass Shooting
On the evening of February 28, 2026, a long-running conflict between neighboring households in rural Hidalgo County, north of Edinburg, Texas, erupted into a deadly exchange of gunfire. Four people were killed and two others were wounded in the violence, which occurred in the 10500 block of State Highway 107. Investigators said the confrontation may have grown out of a road-rage encounter earlier that day, followed by another argument between people who lived near one another.
The incident has often been described as the Edinburg road-rage mass shooting, although authorities did not immediately identify one person as a lone mass murderer. Evidence indicated that more than one firearm may have been discharged during the confrontation. Because several of the people involved were shot and investigators recovered multiple weapons and numerous cartridge casings, detectives worked to determine who fired first, which individuals were armed and whether any of the dead or injured participants had fired weapons.
The Earlier Road-Rage Confrontation
According to information released during the initial investigation, sheriff's deputies were called to the area earlier on February 28 after a reported road-rage dispute involving neighbors. The confrontation was temporarily brought under control, but the people involved reportedly declined to cooperate fully with deputies or pursue charges at that time. Officers left after determining that there was no immediate disturbance requiring an arrest.
The disagreement did not end when law enforcement departed. Later that evening, the conflict resumed near the neighboring properties along State Highway 107. What began as an argument escalated rapidly, and gunfire broke out shortly before 8 p.m. The shooting left victims scattered around the scene and created a complex investigation involving people from both sides of the dispute.
The Fatal Exchange of Gunfire
Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies returned to the rural property after receiving reports that several people had been shot. When deputies arrived, they encountered a chaotic scene containing multiple wounded individuals, discharged cartridge casings, ammunition and firearms. Emergency medical personnel were summoned while deputies secured the area and attempted to determine whether an active shooter remained nearby.
Two men and one woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Three additional men were transported to hospitals for emergency treatment. One of those men later died, bringing the number of fatalities to four. The remaining two wounded men were reported to be in critical and stable condition during the early stages of the investigation.
The victims who died were identified as 41-year-old Valente Trevino, 36-year-old Eliazar Gabriel Martinez Jr., 33-year-old Jacklyn Marie Ortiz Guzman and 34-year-old Juan Luis Guzman. Jacklyn and Juan Guzman were remembered together by relatives and friends, and fundraising efforts were organized to assist their grieving family with funeral and related expenses.
