Patrick Crusius and the 2019 El Paso Walmart Massacre
Overview
On August 3, 2019, 21-year-old Patrick Wood Crusius carried out a mass shooting at a Walmart next to the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas, killing 23 people and injuring 22 others. Authorities investigated the attack as domestic terrorism and a hate crime targeting Hispanics. Shortly before the shooting, he posted a manifesto on 8chan echoing “Great Replacement” rhetoric and referencing the Christchurch mosque attacks as inspiration.
Timeline of the Attack (August 3, 2019)
After an overnight drive of roughly 650 miles from Allen, Texas, Crusius arrived at the store that morning, walked inside to scope the layout, then returned to his car. At approximately 10:37 a.m., he retrieved a semi-automatic WASR-10 rifle and opened fire outside, striking people near a youth soccer fundraiser. At about 10:39 a.m., he entered the west doors and continued shooting along the front of the store, including near the in-store bank and checkout lines. He exited around 10:41 a.m., then drove away and surrendered a short time later at the intersection of Sunmount and Viscount, identifying himself to officers.
