Pete Rogovich’s 1992 Killing Spree in Phoenix, Arizona

Overview

On Sunday, March 15, 1992, 26-year-old Pete Carl Rogovich carried out a deadly, hours-long rampage that left four people dead across west-central Phoenix and a neighboring trailer park. He began by murdering a convenience-store clerk near his apartment, later jumped a fence into the Palo Verde Trailer Park where he shot three more victims, then fled in a Phoenix radio station’s promotional van and was captured after a high-speed chase into Goodyear that evening. According to court records, he confessed after arrest. He was convicted in 1994 and sentenced to death in 1995 for three of the murders, receiving life for the fourth.

Timeline of the Crimes (March 15, 1992)

  • ~8:45 a.m. — A customer discovers the first victim, a clerk at the nearby Super Stop Market, slain by a close-range gunshot inside the store near Rogovich’s central Phoenix apartment. Court findings note no cash or merchandise was stolen at that scene.
  • ~1:00 p.m. — Rogovich emerges from his apartment armed, fires at a car in the lot (flattening a tire) and misses two occupants as they briefly exit to check the noise, then vaults a fence into the adjacent Palo Verde Trailer Park.
  • Early afternoon — Inside the trailer park, he kills three residents in quick succession: one in the laundry room, one in a driveway, and one inside her trailer.
  • Later that afternoon — In a nearby restaurant parking lot, he confronts a local DJ at gunpoint and steals the distinctive Y-95 radio station van.
  • ~5:00 p.m. — He robs a convenience store in Goodyear (grabbing beer and about $45), then leads police on a high-speed pursuit reaching ~100 mph before being stopped at a roadblock and arrested.
