In the spring of 1992, a wave of senseless violence shattered the lives of several families in Phoenix, Arizona, beginning with the tragic death of a young Ethiopian immigrant. Tekleberhan Manna, a 24-year-old Black man, was diligently working his shift as a clerk at the Super Stop Market, a local convenience store situated near his apartment. On March 15th, his life was abruptly and brutally cut short when a man entered the store and fired a single, fatal shot. The bullet struck Tekleberhan in the right eye at close range, leaving no chance for survival. In a perplexing turn of events, the assailant fled without taking any money or merchandise, indicating that robbery was not the motive behind this horrific act.
The investigation into the murder quickly revealed a much larger and more terrifying ordeal unfolding across the city. The perpetrator was identified as Pete Rogovich, a man who, earlier that same day, had been consumed by a fit of rage directed at his girlfriend. His anger tragically escalated into a homicidal rampage. After killing Tekleberhan Manna, Rogovich continued his violent spree, randomly targeting and killing three more innocent people in a nearby trailer park. The victims of his subsequent attacks were 62-year-old Phyllis Mancuso, 48-year-old Rebecca Carreon, and 83-year-old Marie Pendergast.
Following the string of murders that terrorized the community, law enforcement successfully apprehended Pete Rogovich. He was subsequently charged and stood trial for the four murders he committed on that fateful day. The evidence against him was overwhelming, leading to his conviction for the deaths of Tekleberhan Manna, Phyllis Mancuso, Rebecca Carreon, and Marie Pendergast. For his heinous crimes, Pete Rogovich was sentenced to death, bringing a measure of justice to the families of the victims whose lives he had so senselessly destroyed.
