In the early morning hours of October 28, 2024, a violent encounter in west Phoenix claimed the life of 34-year-old Jose Carlos Jimenez, a Hispanic male. The fatal shooting occurred around 3:20 a.m. in the vicinity of 67th Avenue and Highland Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Jimenez and another man, 21-year-old Marquez Anthony Demarcus Booker, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Tragically, neither man could be saved, and both were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a suspect, identified as 20-year-old Jessie James Olvera. According to reports, Olvera fled the scene on foot immediately following the shooting. However, diligent work by homicide detectives led them to a residence in Peoria, near 73rd Avenue and Sanna Street, where Olvera was believed to be located.
After a tense barricade situation at the Peoria home, law enforcement successfully took Jessie James Olvera into custody. During subsequent questioning by detectives, Olvera made incriminating statements regarding his involvement in the shooting. Based on his admissions and other evidence gathered during the investigation, he was arrested and booked on multiple felony charges, including two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Jose Carlos Jimenez and Marquez Anthony Demarcus Booker. The community was left to mourn the loss of two young men as the legal process against the alleged perpetrator began.
