Jason Nightengale’s 2021 Chicago–Evanston Shooting Spree

Overview

On January 9, 2021, 32-year-old Jason Nightengale carried out a cross-city shooting spree that began on Chicago’s South Side and ended in Evanston. He fatally shot multiple people, wounded several others, and was killed later that evening in an exchange of gunfire with Evanston police near Howard Street. Authorities described the attacks as random, with incidents occurring over roughly four hours across Hyde Park/Kenwood, Brainerd, and Evanston.

Timeline of the Crimes (January 9, 2021)

• ~1:50 p.m. — Hyde Park (Regents Park garage, 5000–5035 S. East End Ave.): Nightengale shot and killed University of Chicago Ph.D. student Yiran Fan, 30, as Fan sat in his car in the parking garage.
• Shortly after — Kenwood/Hyde Park (4940 S. East End Ave.): Inside an apartment building lobby, Nightengale fatally shot doorwoman Aisha Johnson, 46, and critically wounded a 77-year-old woman retrieving her mail (identified as Shirley Hinton, 77).
• Afterward — 5500 block S. East End: He forced an acquaintance to hand over a red Toyota on a high floor of a nearby building and fled south.
• ~3:45 p.m. — Brainerd (AK Food Mart, 9307 S. Halsted St.): Nightengale announced a robbery, shot and killed Anthony Faulkner Jr., 20, shot an 81-year-old female cashier in the back and neck, then jumped the counter and robbed the register.
• ~5:00 p.m. — 10300 block S. Halsted (Roseland/West Pullman area): He fired into a passing vehicle, striking Damia Smith, 15, in the head; she later died from her injuries in early February 2021, becoming the fifth fatality.
• ~5:00 p.m. — Return to crime scene: He drove back by the Halsted scene and fired at Chicago police officers investigating the earlier shooting; no officers were hit.
• ~5:00–5:15 p.m. — Evanston (Asbury Ave. & Howard St.): After firing inside a CVS on Asbury, Nightengale crossed to the IHOP at Howard & Asbury, where he shot Marta Torres, 61, in the head. Torres died a week later.
• Moments later — Howard St. near Dollar General (Evanston): Evanston police engaged Nightengale in a shootout and fatally shot him, ending the rampage.

• Anthony Faulkner Jr., 20 — Killed Jan. 9, 2021; shot inside AK Food Mart, 9307 S. Halsted St., Chicago (Brainerd).
• Unidentified woman, 81 — Wounded Jan. 9, 2021; cashier shot in the back and neck during the AK Food Mart robbery at 9307 S. Halsted St., Chicago.
• Damia Smith, 15 — Shot Jan. 9, 2021 in the 10300 block of S. Halsted; died Feb. 2–3, 2021 from her injuries.
• Marta Torres, 61 — Shot Jan. 9, 2021 at the Evanston IHOP (Howard & Asbury); died Jan. 16–17, 2021.
