Byran Koji Uyesugi: The 1999 Xerox Murders in Honolulu

Overview

On November 2, 1999, Xerox technician Byran Koji Uyesugi opened fire on his co-workers during a morning meeting at the Xerox Engineering Systems building on 1200 North Nimitz Highway in Honolulu, Hawaii. In a matter of minutes, seven employees were killed—Hawaii’s deadliest mass shooting. Uyesugi fled the scene in a company van, triggering a citywide manhunt and an hours-long police standoff before surrendering that afternoon.

The Crime

According to court records and contemporaneous reports, Uyesugi entered the second floor where a staff meeting was underway and began shooting with a Glock 17 9mm pistol. Investigators later testified he fired 28 rounds, striking victims with 25 of them, and reloaded once during the attack. He then left the building and drove off in a company vehicle.

Manhunt and Standoff
