Overview
Robert Dorgan, a 56-year-old Rhode Island native who also used the names Roberta Esposito and Roberta Dorgano, carried out a targeted mass shooting against members of Dorgan’s own family during a crowded high school hockey game in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The attack occurred on Monday, February 16, 2026, inside the Dennis M. Lynch Arena at 25 Andrew D. Ferland Way. Three victims ultimately died, two other people were wounded, and Dorgan died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.
The shooting unfolded shortly before 3 p.m. while spectators were watching a game involving the Blackstone Valley high school cooperative hockey team and the Coventry-Johnston cooperative team. The game was also connected to a Senior Night celebration, an occasion when graduating players are traditionally recognized with their families. Instead, the afternoon became a scene of panic as gunfire erupted in the spectator stands and players, parents and other witnesses scrambled for safety.
The Shooting at Dennis M. Lynch Arena
Investigators said Dorgan entered the arena and joined relatives who were sitting in the stands. There was reportedly no obvious confrontation immediately before the shooting. Dorgan suddenly produced a handgun and began firing at specific members of the family group rather than indiscriminately targeting everyone inside the building. Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves described the violence as a targeted incident that appeared to have arisen from a family dispute.
Dorgan’s former wife, Rhonda Dorgan, and their adult son, Aidan Dorgan, were struck by gunfire. Rhonda died at the arena, while Aidan was transported for emergency medical treatment but did not survive. Rhonda’s parents, Gerald and Linda Dorgan, were also shot, as was family friend Thomas Geruso. All three were initially reported to be in critical condition.
Aidan reportedly attempted to protect his mother and intervene as the shooting unfolded. Other people in the arena also rushed toward the attacker despite the danger. At least one bystander physically confronted Dorgan and helped bring the initial assault to an end. The intervention prevented Dorgan from continuing to move freely through the crowded stands, although police later determined that Dorgan had brought more than one firearm into the arena.
After being confronted and partially subdued, Dorgan reached for a second handgun and fired a fatal shot at Dorgan’s own head. Police officers arriving at the arena found Dorgan dead near two firearms. Officers initially entered without knowing whether the attacker was still alive, while witnesses shouted information about the location of the gunman and the wounded victims.

A Family Gathering Turned Deadly
The Dorgan family had gathered at the arena to support another of Robert and Rhonda’s sons, Colin Dorgan, who was participating in the hockey game. Colin was on the ice when gunfire broke out in the stands. The victims included his mother, brother and grandfather, making the shooting a devastating act of familicide committed in front of students, teammates and members of the local community.
Players raced away from the ice and sought shelter in locker rooms, while spectators ducked behind seats or fled through exits. Some witnesses initially mistook the gunshots for balloons popping during the Senior Night celebration. Once the seriousness of the situation became clear, adults moved young people away from the stands and barricaded doors while others remained with the wounded.
People with medical training who were attending the game immediately began providing first aid. Retired firefighters, emergency medical technicians and a nurse reportedly treated victims before ambulances transported the survivors to Rhode Island Hospital. Police secured the arena and used buses to move players and families to Pawtucket Police Headquarters, where they could be interviewed and reunited with relatives.
Dorgan’s Identity and Background
Police identified the shooter by the legal name Robert Dorgan and said Dorgan was born in 1969. Authorities also acknowledged that Dorgan used the names Roberta Esposito and Roberta Dorgano. Public records and reporting indicated that Dorgan had undergone a gender transition and had asked some people to use the name Roberta.
Dorgan had previously lived in Rhode Island and Jacksonville, Florida, and had worked as a truck driver. At the time of the shooting, Dorgan was reportedly employed at the General Dynamics Bath Iron Works shipyard in Maine. Dorgan had also briefly served in the United States Marine Corps in 1988 but was discharged after approximately three months.
Family members and court records described years of conflict involving Dorgan’s behavior and mental health. Rhonda Dorgan filed for divorce in 2020, and the divorce was finalized in June 2021. Although the filings referred to personal and behavioral disputes, police did not declare any one issue to be the established motive for the 2026 killings.
Investigation and Weapons
The Pawtucket Police Department led the investigation with assistance from the Rhode Island State Police, federal firearms investigators and other law-enforcement agencies. Detectives interviewed more than 100 witnesses, reviewed recordings from inside the arena and examined Dorgan’s vehicle and belongings. A white van associated with Dorgan was removed from the arena parking lot as part of the investigation.
Two semiautomatic pistols were recovered near Dorgan’s body. Subsequent reporting identified them as a Glock 29SF chambered in 10mm and a SIG Sauer P226 chambered in .357 SIG. Investigators traced the firearms and reported that they had been legally purchased. Additional guns and ammunition were later recovered from locations connected to Dorgan in Maine, including a residence or personal storage space.
Police said there was no evidence that another attacker was involved and no continuing threat to the public after the arena was secured. The investigation focused on Dorgan as the sole shooter. Because Dorgan died at the scene, there could be no arrest, criminal prosecution or trial for the murders.
Motive and Prior Warning Signs
Authorities characterized the shooting as domestic in nature and said the victims had been deliberately selected. However, investigators did not announce a conclusive motive. Dorgan had attended family hockey games previously without committing violence, and police said there had been no specific warning that an attack would occur at the February 16 game.
Relatives described Dorgan as having serious mental-health and behavioral problems, but those statements did not amount to a formal explanation for the killings. Reports about divorce disputes, estrangement, political comments and angry social-media posts provided background to the case, yet law-enforcement officials continued to distinguish those details from a proven motive.
Gerald Dorgan’s Death
For more than a week after the shooting, Gerald Dorgan remained hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, Pawtucket police announced that the 75-year-old had died. His death raised the number of murdered victims from two to three, excluding the shooter.
Gerald’s death deepened an already extraordinary loss for the surviving family. Rhonda Dorgan, her son Aidan and her father Gerald were later remembered together during funeral services held in March 2026. Their deaths left surviving relatives grieving three generations of one family killed in a single targeted attack.
Community Response and Aftermath
The shooting shocked Pawtucket and communities throughout Rhode Island. State officials lowered flags to half-staff in honor of the victims, and schools offered counseling and mental-health assistance to students, athletes, staff members and families who had witnessed the violence. The Rhode Island Interscholastic League temporarily suspended games out of respect for those killed and wounded.
The Blackstone Valley hockey team eventually returned to competition while supporting Colin Dorgan, whose mother, brother and grandfather had been killed as he played. In March, the team advanced through the playoffs and won the Rhode Island Division II state championship following a four-overtime final. The victory was widely described as an emotional moment for players and a community still coping with the massacre.
