Early Life

Carl Eugene Watts, also known as "Coral," was born on November 7, 1953, in Killeen, Texas. His parents, Richard Eugene Watts and Dorothy Mae Young, divorced when he was less than two years old. Watts and his mother moved to Inkster, Michigan, where she remarried in 1962. As a child, Watts struggled academically and was known to have violent fantasies about torturing and killing girls and young women. At the age of 15, he was arrested for assaulting a woman and was subsequently admitted to a mental hospital. Despite these early warning signs, Watts graduated from high school in 1973 and briefly attended Lane College in Tennessee before being expelled for stalking and assaulting women.

Criminal Activities

Watts began his killing spree in 1974 at the age of 20. Over the next eight years, he targeted women between the ages of 14 and 44, employing various methods such as strangulation, stabbing, bludgeoning, and drowning. His victims were often thin, attractive, and white, and he attacked in multiple jurisdictions, making it difficult for law enforcement to connect the crimes. Watts rarely performed sexual acts on his victims, leading investigators to believe his crimes were not sexually motivated.

Known Victims

• Gloria Steele, 19: October 30, 1974 – Stabbed to death in her apartment in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
• Jeanne Clyne, 44: October 31, 1979 – Stabbed 11 times while walking near her home in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan.
• Shirley Small, 17: April 20, 1980 – Fatally stabbed twice in the heart outside her home in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
• Glenda Richmond, 26: July 13, 1980 – Suffered 28 knife wounds to her chest outside her summer residence in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
• Rebecca Huff, 20: September 14, 1980 – Found dead with approximately 50 stab wounds outside her home in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
• Susan Wolf, 21: September 3, 1981 – Fatally stabbed near her apartment in Houston, Texas.
• Linda Tilley, 22: September 5, 1981 – Drowned in the swimming pool of her apartment complex in Austin, Texas.
• Elizabeth Montgomery, 25: September 12, 1981 – Stabbed to death while walking her dogs in Houston, Texas.
• Phyllis Tamm, 27: January 4, 1982 – Attacked while jogging in Houston, Texas; Watts choked her and then hung her using an elastic strap.
• Margaret Fossi, 25: January 17, 1982 – Strangled; her body was found in the trunk of her car at Rice University in Houston, Texas.
• Elena Semander, 20: February 7, 1982 – Found strangled in a Houston trash dumpster.
• Emily LaQua, 14: March 20, 1982 – Strangled on her way to her new job as a waitress in Brookshire, Texas; her body was found five months later stuffed in a culvert.
• Edith Ledet, 34: March 27, 1982 – Stabbed to death in Galveston, Texas, after returning home from a graduation party.
• Yolanda Gracia, 21: April 15, 1982 – Stabbed to death in her front lawn as she returned home in Houston, Texas.
• Carrie Jefferson, 32: April 16, 1982 – Strangled and then stabbed twice as she returned home from her job at Houston's downtown post office; Watts buried her body along White Oak Bayou.
• Suzanne Searles, 25: April 21, 1982 – Grabbed as she returned home from a party in Houston, Texas; Watts strangled her and held her head in a flowerpot full of water before burying her.
• Michelle Maday, 20: May 23, 1982 – Strangled to death outside her apartment in Houston, Texas; Watts took her body into the apartment and dumped it in the bathtub.
