Overview

Robert Christian Hansen, infamously known as the "Butcher Baker," was a notorious American serial killer active in Anchorage, Alaska, between 1971 and 1983. Hansen abducted, raped, and murdered at least 17 women, often releasing them into the Alaskan wilderness to hunt them down like prey. A skilled hunter and licensed pilot, Hansen used his knowledge of the terrain to evade capture for over a decade.

Crimes

Hansen targeted women, primarily sex workers and dancers, luring them with promises of money or job opportunities. He would abduct them, subject them to horrific abuse, and then transport them to remote locations, often by plane. There, he would release them into the wilderness and hunt them with a Ruger Mini-14 rifle and hunting knives. His crimes were marked by meticulous planning and a chilling lack of remorse.

Victims

• Celia "Beth" van Zanten (18): Disappeared on December 22, 1971. Her body was found on December 25, 1971, in a ravine in Chugach State Park. She had been sexually assaulted and died from exposure after attempting to escape. Hansen denied involvement, and no conclusive evidence linked him to her death.
• "Eklutna Annie" (Unidentified): Estimated age between late teens and early 20s. Her body was discovered on July 21, 1980, near Eklutna Lake Road. She had been stabbed to death. Despite efforts, her identity remains unknown.
• Joanna Messina (24): Her body was found in a gravel pit near Seward, Alaska, in July 1980. She had been shot and her body partially eaten by wildlife.
• Sherry Morrow (23): Last seen on November 17, 1981, she was found in a shallow grave near the Knik River on September 12, 1982. She had been shot three times in the back.
• Paula Goulding (30): Abducted on April 25, 1983. Her body was discovered on September 2, 1983, near the Knik River. She had been shot in the back.
• Andrea "Fish" Altiery (24): Last seen on December 2, 1981, when she left to meet a man for a photo shoot. Her body was never found, but her belongings were discovered in Hansen's possession.
• Sue Luna (23): Agreed to a $300 photo shoot on May 26, 1982. Her body was found on April 24, 1984, near the Knik River. Hansen had stripped her naked and hunted her before shooting her.
• Robin Pelkey (19): Disappeared in July 1983. Her remains were found on April 25, 1984, near Horseshoe Lake. She was unidentified for decades until DNA analysis confirmed her identity in October 2021.
• DeLynne "Sugar" Frey (22): Went missing in March 1983. Her body was discovered on a sandbar in the Knik River on August 20, 1985. She was identified in 1989 through her jewelry.
• Tamera "Tami" Pederson (20): Last heard from on August 7, 1982, when she mentioned a photo shoot offer. Her body was found on April 29, 1984, near the Old Knik Bridge.
• Roxane Easland (24): Disappeared on June 28, 1980, after planning to meet an unnamed man. Her body was never found, but Hansen confessed to her murder.
• Lisa Futrell (41): Last seen on September 6, 1980. Her body was found on May 9, 1984, near the Knik Arm Bridge.
• Malai Larsen (28): Reported missing on July 10, 1981. Her body was discovered on April 24, 1984, near the Knik Arm Bridge.
• Teresa Watson (22): Last seen on March 25, 1983, when she mentioned meeting a man for $300. Her body was found on April 26, 1984, near Scenic Lake.
• Angela Feddern (24): Last seen in February 1983. Her body was discovered on April 26, 1984, near Figure Eight Lake.
