Anthony Joyner: The Nursing Home Serial Killer

Early Life and Background

Anthony Joyner was born on May 26, 1962, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Little is known about his early life, but he was described as physically weak during his teenage years. This led to social challenges, including limited success with women and rumors about his sexuality, which he strongly denied. Lacking higher education, Joyner took on various low-skilled jobs. In October 1981, he secured a position as an assistant nutritionist in the kitchen of Philadelphia's Kearsley Home, Christ Church Hospital, the nation's oldest operating nursing home at the time. Colleagues and patients viewed him as friendly and affectionate towards the elderly residents.

The Murders

Between January and July 1983, a series of suspicious deaths occurred at the Kearsley Home. Joyner targeted elderly female residents, aged between 83 and 92, exploiting his familiarity with the facility to access their rooms unnoticed. The victims were found with signs of sexual assault and suffocation, but initial investigations attributed their deaths to natural causes due to their advanced ages.
