Ramon Alberto Escobar
Ramon Alberto Escobar is a Salvadoran-born serial killer whose violent crimes stretched from Houston, Texas, to Southern California in 2018. During a period of only a few weeks, Escobar killed two members of his own family in Texas and then carried out a succession of attacks in Los Angeles County, frequently approaching people who were sleeping outdoors and striking them with blunt weapons. Seven people ultimately became murder victims for which Escobar was convicted, while seven additional people survived attacks attributed to him. Years after the original crime spree, Escobar was also charged with killing his prison cellmate.
The Murders in Houston
Escobar's 2018 killing spree began in Houston, where he had been staying with his uncle, Rogelio Escobar. Rogelio disappeared on August 26, 2018. Investigators later learned from Ramon Escobar himself that the disappearance was a homicide. Escobar admitted killing his uncle after a dispute and described striking him with an old police-style baton. He subsequently disposed of Rogelio's body in a trash container.
Rogelio's sister, Dina Escobar, became concerned when her brother disappeared. She began looking for him and was last seen on August 28, 2018. According to Escobar's later confession, he concealed himself inside Dina's vehicle and attacked her while she was searching for Rogelio. Escobar admitted killing Dina and disposing of her body in a separate dumpster. Authorities searched for both victims, but their bodies could not ultimately be recovered from the landfill where investigators believed the refuse containing their remains had been taken.
Dina's vehicle was later discovered burned near Galveston. Houston investigators questioned Ramon Escobar on August 30, but at that stage they lacked sufficient evidence to charge him in connection with his relatives' disappearances. By the time investigators developed additional evidence, Escobar had left Texas and traveled west toward California.
Arrival in Southern California
Authorities determined that Escobar reached the Los Angeles area in early September 2018. He lived out of his vehicle and spent time around homeless communities. Within days, a pattern of exceptionally violent early-morning assaults began in Santa Monica and Los Angeles.
Many of the victims were asleep and therefore had little or no opportunity to defend themselves. Investigators said Escobar used a wooden baseball bat, bolt cutters or other blunt objects. Several victims suffered catastrophic head injuries. In some attacks, surveillance footage or other evidence showed Escobar searching through victims' belongings afterward. Investigators concluded that robbery and the vulnerability of isolated sleeping victims were important elements of the crimes rather than a specific ideological hatred of homeless people.
