Branden Ridout, a 24-year-old man, tragically lost his life on September 16, 2018, as part of a series of brutal attacks targeting homeless individuals in Los Angeles and Santa Monica. Ridout, who was believed to be homeless, was one of several victims in a spree of violence carried out by Ramon Escobar, a 47-year-old convicted felon. Escobar, who had fled Texas after being questioned in the disappearance of two relatives, used a baseball bat to savagely beat his victims, often while they were
asleep in secluded areas. The attacks were primarily motivated by robbery, as Escobar rifled through the victims' belongings after the assaults.
Escobar's crime spree began shortly after his arrival in Los Angeles on September 5, 2018, and continued until his arrest on September 24, 2018. During this period, he attacked multiple individuals, leaving three dead, including Ridout, and several others injured. The victims were predominantly homeless, highlighting the vulnerability of this population to such targeted violence. Escobar's actions were described as those of a 'violent predator' by law enforcement officials, who emphasized the calculated and opportunistic nature of his crimes.
Following his arrest, Escobar was charged with multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, and second-degree robbery. The charges against him included the deaths of Ridout and two other victims, Kelvin Williams, 59, and Steven Ray Cruze Jr., 39. Cruze, unlike Ridout and Williams, was not homeless but occasionally slept outdoors. Escobar's arrest brought an end to a harrowing chapter of violence that had gripped the Los Angeles area, and his case underscored the broader societal issues surrounding homelessness and safety.
