Juan Villanueva, a 53-year-old inmate at North Kern State Prison in Delano, California, was found unresponsive in his cell on the morning of February 24, 2023. Villanueva had been sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years old. He had been transferred to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation custody on February 2, 2023.
