At the age of 11, his parents divorced, leading to a turbulent childhood. Lewis became involved in petty crimes during his youth and struggled to maintain steady employment in adulthood.

Criminal Activities and Escalation

Lewis's criminal behavior escalated over time. In 1987, he was arrested and convicted for the attempted murder of a five-year-old girl named Stephanie after breaking into her apartment and nearly strangling her to death.

• Peggy Lynn Grimes Date: September 1993 Location: Douglas County, Georgia Details: Grimes, 22, was eight months pregnant when she went missing. Her remains were discovered five years later in a wooded area. Lewis confessed to her murder, stating he picked her up on Stewart Avenue in Atlanta, drove her to Douglas County, and attacked her with a hunting knife. He attempted to cut open her stomach to remove the baby.
• Kathleen Bracken Date: April 11, 1998 Location: Baldwin County, Alabama Details: Bracken, 32, was found murdered in the Twilite Motel in Mobile, Alabama. She had been strangled and stabbed. Witnesses reported seeing a man with a red pickup truck at the motel, leading authorities to Lewis. He confessed to picking up Bracken, a prostitute, and murdering her.
• Misty McGugin Date: January 31, 1998 Location: Mobile, Alabama Details: McGugin, 22, was an escort who went missing after being called to Woody's Motel. Her abandoned car was found at a nearby bar. Lewis confessed to murdering her by strangulation and stabbing, then dumping her body in the woods. He led police to her remains after his arrest.
• Unidentified Woman ("Bodine" or "Bodean") Date: 1993 or 1994 Location: Near Charlie Brown Airport, Atlanta, Georgia Details: Lewis confessed to murdering a woman he believed was named "Bodine" or "Bodean," who frequented the Alamo Hotel on Metropolitan Parkway. He picked her up, drove to a dirt pit near the airport, raped her at knifepoint, and stabbed her 30 to 40 times. Her partial skeletal remains were found in 2002, but she was not identified until August 2022.
