Anna Hlatky

Background

Anna Hlatky was a 36‑year‑old resident of Monessen, Pennsylvania. Born circa 1893 in Pennsylvania, she faced intense pressure within her marriage. Her husband reportedly threatened her with death if she bore more children, which led to a series of tragic events in 1927 and 1928 .

The Crimes

In two separate incidents, Anna delivered twins at home and intentionally killed them shortly after birth:
  • July 1927: Gave birth to twins at home; she smothered them under a bedcover, wrapped them in old sweaters, and buried them in the backyard with her daughter's help .
  • August 11, 1928: Gave birth again to twins; once more, she smothered the infants and buried the bodies in the chicken yard at the rear of her home .

Discovery & Legal Proceedings

On August 25, 1928, Anna sought medical care at Memorial Hospital under suspicious circumstances. Authorities exhumed the earlier twins’ remains from the backyard on August 31, 1928. She signed a confession on September 1, 1928, admitting the smothering of both sets of twins . Her trial began on November 21, 1928, and concluded on November 23, 1928. She was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and, on January 21, 1929, sentenced to an indeterminate term of 7 to 24 years in the Women’s State Industrial Home at Muncie, Pennsylvania. Anna remained calm during sentencing, expressing only concern for her surviving children, who were placed under county care . ...Read More
