Matthew Steven Johnson: A Detailed Account of His Crimes

Early Life and Background

Matthew Steven Johnson was born on May 24, 1963, in Hartford, Connecticut, as one of ten siblings, including his fraternal twin. Growing up in Hartford's Blue Hills and Asylum Hill neighborhoods, Johnson faced numerous challenges. At the age of 12, he lost sight in one eye due to a pellet gun incident. Described as a sweet yet immature child, he exhibited behaviors such as thumb-sucking when confronted with tasks he wished to avoid. His kindergarten teacher later characterized him as highly aggressive and unable to cope with denial. During his teenage years, Johnson underwent multiple evaluations at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. While he excelled in music and physical education, his academic performance was hindered by an intellectual disability, reflected in his recorded IQ of 69. Additionally, he suffered from seizures that required medication. By 17, Johnson had minimal contact with his father but continued weekend visits with his family. He discontinued his medication due to dizziness and turned to drugs and alcohol to manage his depression. Despite these challenges, he sought help at The Institute of Living in Hartford, earning his high school equivalency diploma before working as a laborer.

Johnson's criminal activities began in his late teens:
