Early Life

Robert Edward Maury was born on February 24, 1958, in Crescent City, California. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to Anderson, California. After completing high school, Maury enlisted in the Army but was dishonorably discharged in 1985 due to marijuana possession. Following his discharge, he settled in Cottonwood, California, where he worked intermittently as a landscaper and dried-flower arranger.

Crimes

Maury's criminal activities spanned from 1985 to 1987 in Shasta County, California. He was convicted of murdering three women during this period. Notably, after committing these murders, Maury anonymously contacted the Secret Witness Program—a local tip line—to provide information about the locations of the victims' bodies, earning him the moniker "The Tipster Killer."

  • Details: Weeden was Maury's landlord. She went missing in late May 1985. On June 19, an anonymous caller contacted the Secret Witness Program inquiring about a reward for information on her whereabouts. Subsequently, on August 8, the same caller provided precise directions to a wooded area along Bechelli Lane near South Bonnyview Road in Redding, where Weeden's body was found partially buried and wrapped in cardboard. An autopsy revealed skull fractures and indications of strangulation.

  • Date of Body Discovery: August 17, 1987
  • Location: Near Palm Avenue and Monte Vista Road, Redding, California
  • Details: Stark was last seen by her boyfriend on June 25, 1987. On August 8, an anonymous caller informed the Secret Witness Program about a body, claiming it was of a woman named Gretchen Olston. The caller provided specific directions to a remote area near Palm Avenue and Monte Vista Road, where Stark's body was discovered. She was identified by her numerous tattoos.

  • Date of Body Discovery: September 22, 1987
  • Location: Approximately 250 yards from where Stark's body was found, Redding, California
  • Details: Berryhill was last seen on June 22, 1987, when she left her 6-month-old son with a friend. Her body was discovered in a remote, bushy area near where Stark's body was found. Due to decomposition, identification was made through dental records. An autopsy indicated she had been strangled with a bootlace.
