José Manuel Martínez: The Life and Crimes of 'El Mano Negra'
Background
José Manuel Martínez, born on June 13, 1962, in Fresno, California, is a Mexican-American who confessed to being a hitman for Mexican drug cartels. Over a span of more than three decades, Martínez claimed responsibility for the deaths of 36 individuals across at least 12 U.S. states. His criminal activities remained largely undetected until his arrest in 2013. Martínez is currently serving multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Criminal Activities
Martínez's involvement in violent crimes began in his youth. In 1978, at the age of 16, he reportedly sought revenge for the rape and murder of his sister by killing the three men he believed responsible. This act marked the onset of his career as a contract killer. Martínez often targeted individuals involved in drug trafficking, primarily those indebted to Mexican cartels. His methodical approach and ability to evade law enforcement allowed him to operate undetected for decades.
