The investigation into Misty's whereabouts took a dark turn when authorities learned she had been working for an escort service under the name 'Tosha.' The breakthrough came with the arrest of Gerald Patrick Lewis in connection with the murder of another woman, Kathleen Bracken, on April 12, 1998, in a Mobile motel. During questioning, Lewis not only confessed to Bracken's murder but also provided chilling details about the fate of Misty McGugin. He admitted to killing her in a motel room in late January or early February of that year.
Lewis's confession was harrowing. He recounted how he had strangled Misty with a rope and then stabbed her.
