On September 24, 2018, Jorge Martinez, a 63-year-old Hispanic male, was brutally attacked in Santa Monica, California. Martinez was struck in the head with what appeared to be bolt cutters. He was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries on September 30, 2018 .
The assailant, Ramon Alberto Escobar, a 50-year-old man, was identified and apprehended shortly after the attack. Escobar had a history of violent crimes and had been deported six times prior to the incident. He was recognized by a Santa Monica police officer who had seen surveillance footage linking him to previous attacks in Los Angeles. Upon his arrest, authorities found a wooden baseball bat and a pair of bolt cutters in his possession, believed to be the weapons used in the assaults .
Escobar's crime spree spanned several weeks in September 2018, during which he attacked multiple individuals, primarily targeting homeless men. His motives were reportedly driven by robbery and personal grievances. In May 2022, Escobar pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including the murder of Jorge Martinez. He was sentenced to two life terms without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 124 years to life in prison .
