Linwood Earl Briley: A Notorious Serial Killer
Introduction
Linwood Earl Briley, along with his brothers James and Anthony, terrorized Richmond, Virginia, in the late 1970s with a series of brutal murders. The Briley brothers, along with accomplice Duncan Meekins, were responsible for at least eleven killings between 1971 and 1979. Their crimes were marked by extreme violence and apparent lack of remorse. Linwood, the eldest of the three, played a leading role in orchestrating the killings.
First Murder: 1971
Linwood Briley's first known murder occurred in 1971 when he was just 16 years old. He shot and killed 57-year-old Orline Christian, an elderly neighbor, from a window of his home. The victim was hanging laundry in her backyard when Linwood fired a rifle, striking her in the back of the head. Initially, the police thought she died of natural causes, but later an autopsy revealed the bullet wound. Linwood was convicted of the crime but was released after serving a minimal sentence.
